Elton John 原名 Reginald Kenneth Dwight ,1947年出生于英国伦敦的近郊。幼年时就读于英国皇家音乐学院，1964年毕业后就白天做音乐出版商，晚上到酒吧里弹钢琴。几年后加入一支名为 Bluesolgy 的乐队，该乐队因为许多著名的美国灵歌乐手伴奏而出名。1967年，经 Liberty唱片公司介绍，Elton John结识了词作家 Bernie Taupin ，两人随即成为黄金拍档一直合作至今。1969年，Phillips 公司发行了两人合作的第一首单曲“Lady Samantha”（萨曼莎女士），从而引起DIM公司的兴趣，不久就为 Elton John出版了第一张专辑《Empty Sky》（空空的天）。几个月后，Elton John的同名专辑推出，其中的一首“Your Song”（你的歌）同时打进英美排行榜前10名。在为电影《Friends》（朋友）创作并出版原声专辑后，Elton John又推出了带乡村乐风格的专辑《Tumbleweed Connection》（风滚草的联系）和现场版专辑《17－10－70》，这3 张专辑加上《Elton John》全部打入排行榜前30佳的行列，这一成就以前只有 The Beatles乐队才有过。从此，Elton John成为全球最出名的流行摇滚乐手之一，他迎合时代的需要，填补了 The Beatles之后留下的空白。
