经过99、2000、2001、的磨练，终于做出了重大的改变,取消了援助系统,KOF02又回复到了98的三人组队的经典模式，加入了对战电脑时可以从两支队伍中选一队作为对手的新系统SNK复活，他们也意识到了平衡性的重要性，此作平衡性很强，暴气改成了BC，也不是暴气增加攻击防御了，而且加快速度，能连上很多未暴气时不能连续的招数，同时降低攻击力（平衡性由此可见~）;本作的必杀技种类也算多种多样了,除了必杀技和超必杀技外还增加了隐藏必杀技,使用条件为体力1/4以下,爆气状态下,有一颗能量珠.游戏画面比2001有质的飞跃,而且每个场景都有天气的变化.
