《灰色花园》早在1975年就已拍成影片，导演梅索兄弟(Albert Maysles & David Maysles)以七个月的时间贴身记录了杰奎琳·肯尼迪(Jackie Kennedy)一对远亲母女纠葛的关系，导演拍摄两人喂猫、喂浣熊、吃饭、回忆往事和彼此埋怨。观众对她们的实际背景所知不多，却可以透过影片内容，极生动地见识到这两人的性格及互动，所谓真实电影的长处与局限，在本片中皆表露无遗。



如今由德鲁和杰西卡·兰格(Jessica Lange)共同饰演母女，片中饰演母亲的兰格曾在1982年凭借《窈窕淑男》(Tootsie)赢得奥斯卡最佳女配角提名，1994便以《芳心的放纵》(Blue Sky)勇夺奥斯卡影后桂冠，。据德鲁说，这是一部“有关爱的影片”，“这个故事很美，它能激发人对爱的向往和追求。
