上世纪30年代的美国，离马丁·路德金开始为黑人争取权益的时间还早20多年。黑人居民在美国依然时时感受到歧视，种族隔离政策依然盛行。然而，1935年，在德克萨斯州一个仅有350名学生韦莱学院中，教师迈尔文·托尔森（丹泽尔·华盛顿）决定成立一个学生辩论队，并且努力让他们达到能与国家一流大学学生竞争的水平。当然，韦莱学院的学生全是黑人，在种族主义盛行的年代，托尔森的这个目标不太容易到达。 托尔森本身是个诗人，对生活有着激情，他坚信只要努力目标就能实现。于是他在学校开了个兴趣班，专门教有兴趣的学生辩论的知识，而托尔森第一次开课所讲的话就是“我是个黑人，同时也是个美国人”，他不仅教会学生辩论知识，同时让他们明白人生而平等的道理。兴趣班中的四个学生：亨利·劳尔（纳特·帕克）、汉密尔顿·伯格斯（杰梅尼·威廉姆斯）、萨曼莎·布克（茱妮·斯莫蕾特）还有年仅14岁的小詹姆斯·法莫（丹泽尔·惠特克）最后成为托尔森辩论队成员。 托尔森的想法在当时被大多数人认为太过激进，对托尔森有这种印象的人当中，不仅有自视甚高的美国白人，就算黑人本身也有会认为托尔森这样的做法是在闹事，韦莱学院的院长詹姆斯·法莫博士（弗里斯特·惠特克）就是当中的一个。 法莫院长不希望自己的儿子小詹姆斯·法莫加入托尔森的辩论队，然而儿子坚持要跟着托尔森学习。托尔森带着4人辩论队到黑人社区发表演讲，一次次的成功使得这支队伍在黑人社区中的名气越来越大，而主流的白人社会也开始以各种方式关注这支黑人队伍，有的认为托尔森的队伍不知好歹，并开始用威胁甚至暴力对待这支黑人队伍，而有的则以友好的姿态欢迎这支黑马队伍的出现。哈佛大学给托尔森发了邀请函，希望托尔森的队伍能进到这所美国第一学府当中，与他们的学生辩论队来一次比赛。当然，哈佛的学生辩论队成员都是白人。于是，托尔森和他的队伍成为史上第一支能与白人正面对抗的辩论队。
