1939 年，纳瓦拉国王的宫庭陷于一阵骚动中。国王决定把他的王国变成知识分子搞研究的完美场所。最后他说服他的朋友伯龙尼、杜梅因和朗格维尔公开发誓独自潜心搞研究。一周斋戒一天，每晚睡觉不得超过三小时，最重要的是，不允许有一个女人——不管她多迷人——转移他们寻求知识的注意力。现在法国公主要来了，这对他们所持的戒律可是一个挑战。伯龙尼一开始就表示怀疑，但还是像其他人一样决定遵守国王的法令。年轻的法国公主的父亲派她率一个官方使团来这里签署两国的经济合作协定，却受到冷淡的公事公办的待遇。她的随从中有三个迷人的侍女凯瑟琳、罗莎琳和玛丽亚。最初，四个年轻绅士还能努力抵抗住这些可爱女子的诱惑，不久，他们原来的打算全都烟飘云散了，尽管他们不愿承认这一点……
