《哇哇岁月》是长期活跃于剧场、电影、电视甚至文学创作的英国痞子李察.E.葛兰自编自导的处女作，也是成长于史瓦济兰的李察.E.葛兰与外交官父亲间的自传性回忆。

《哇哇岁月》集合了当今英国影坛一流演员如加布里埃尔·伯恩、米兰达·理查森和艾米丽·沃森等，饰演灵魂人物罗夫的则是在《非关男孩》中令观众印象深刻的小男主角尼古拉斯·霍尔特，艾米丽·沃森更因在片中精湛诠释后母一角获得英国独立精神奖最佳女主角提名。值得一提的是，本片不仅摄影出色，如实呈现出东非壮阔苍莽的恢弘景致，音乐方面的表现亦不遑多让。担任电影配乐的帕特里克·杜尔（Patrick Doyle）已堪称配乐界的大师级人物，曾为包括《烈爱风云》、《理性与感性》、《迷雾庄园》、《BJ单身日记》等名片操刀。在他谱写的配乐衬托下，更将剧中诸多人物的悲欢聚散渲染得悠远动人。
