　在当代的美国纽约的曼哈顿街区里隐居着一位魔法巫师巴尔萨泽•布莱克（尼古拉斯•凯奇饰），他和女巫维罗妮卡（莫妮卡•贝鲁奇饰）一直与自己的宿敌马克西姆•霍瓦斯（阿尔弗雷德•莫里纳饰）在纽约的街头巷尾里对抗着。许多年来一直未分胜负，但是由于马克西姆凭借黑暗力量日益强大，巴尔萨泽深感自己不再是他的对手，因此他决定要训练学徒来继承自己的衣钵，可被他寄予厚望的新徒弟戴夫•斯特特勒（杰伊•巴鲁切尔饰）怎么看都不是这块料，他整天想着的不是魔法，而是心仪的女生贝蒂（泰莉莎•帕尔墨饰）。于是，为了将他训练成可以与黑暗势力对抗的魔法巫师，巴尔萨泽开始了一系列可以调动戴夫生存勇气的训练计划……
