Fine and Mellow: Live at Birdland West

名成利就的Sarah Vaughan唤起了大眾对於若乾同样出名的咆勃爵士女声之注意，Carmen McRae便是其中之一。1920年，生於美国纽约市，弹得一手出色钢琴的McRae，亦同时被公认为咆勃女声中'Scat'得最好的一位。除了同样效力於Benny Carter这支发掘咆勃歌手的发源乐团，McRae的现场演出历程更踏遍了Mercer Ellington以及Count Basie大乐团的舞台。1950年后，权威爵士刊物Down Beat正式票选McRae为年度最出色的女声，纵使能够登上排行榜的名曲不如Sarah Vaughan来得多，但是McRae的'The Next Time It Happens'及'Skyliner'实在为爵士Vocal曲目中不可或缺的经典作品。六零至八零年代，McRae再将事业重心放在巡迴演出上，欧洲及日本都是他的进据地之一，录音专辑的数目亦因此大幅下降，但后期她向Nat King Cole及Sarah Vaughan致敬的两张作品依然深入人心。如此出色的Carmen McRae一直没有赢得葛莱美奖项让人颇为费解，亦因如此她也曾於访问中公开抨击葛莱美奖，甚至爵士乐坛上不公平的地方。
