The 2nd Law

本张新专辑的标题《The 2nd Law》可译为“热力学第二定律”，乐队主唱Matt Bellamy在Twitter上曾有提及并阐述了他对此的想法：可能把热从低温物体传到高温物体而不产生其他影响；不可能从单一热源取热使之完全转换为有用的功而不产生其他影响；不可逆热力过程中熵的微增量总是大于零，它会增加、增加、增加，直至千疮百孔。这一点也与专辑“以世界末日为主题”相呼应。
缪斯诸人过去创作的歌曲多半是围绕较冰冷、黑暗的社会议题展开，而本张专辑则第一次加入了情感题材。Matt Bellamy对此表示：“很幸运的是我们三人都喜欢搞搞新尝试，因此我们尽量在每份新作中都力求突破。”因此，这次歌曲内容会包含一些创作者内心感受的同时，在专辑中新的声音样式、新的乐器还有新的创意都令人耳目一新——譬如，相比前作，这张新专辑融入了更多的Dubstep（重复性的电子低音贝斯及节拍）元素。
