Kid British are a British band from Manchester signed to Mercury Records in the United Kingdom. The band is composed of Adio Marchant, James Mayer, Sean Mbaya, and Simeon Mclean.
Kid British was born when Sean Mbaya from Prestwich worked as a producer with a band called Action Manky - made up of Adio Marchant from Chorlton and Simeon Mclean and James Mayer from Withington - all joined forces last year to form Kid British.[2] The band signed to Mercury Records in the summer of 2008 and released their first single 'Elizabeth' (7" vinyl only) on the 'Another Music Another Kitchen' label in the October of that same year. Their first Mercury release followed in the form of the 'Lost in London ep' featuring the tracks 'She Will leave' 'Lost in London' and 'Elizabeth'. The band picked up fans at radio 1, namely Huew Stephens who they sessioned for, and breakfast shows Chris Moyles. The band then recorded their debut album 'It was this or football' with a number of producers including Stephen Street (The Smiths/Morrissey/Blur) Steve Dub and Segs (Chemical Brothers/VV Brown) and Steve Power (Robbie Williams/Feeder). At a gig in London on March 11th 2009 the band were joined on the stage by Lynval Golding of the recently reunited Ska band The Specials. Lynval invited the band to join The Specials as a supporting act during their May 2009 tour, to which the band agreed.[3]
After touring with The Specials and The Enemy they appeared on Big Brother's Big Mouth on E4 on the 12th June 2009 and set off on a summer of festival dates including impressive performances at V as well as appearing at the iTunes Live: London Festival '09 along with Mr. Hudson. They released the single Our House Is Dadless on 7th of July 2009, it samples the Madness track Our House; in a chart dominated by Michael Jackson re-releases it debuted at number 63 and also peaked at number 63 during its one week run in the top 75. They released the first half of the debut album 'It was this or football' on the 20th of the same month which debuted at number 67 and also peaked at number 67 during its one week run in the top 75. In September 2009 the band performed the finale at the Mobo awards in Glasgow as part of the Young Soul Rebels collective with a performance of the single 'I got soul' a cover of the Killers track 'All these things I've done' an Island records release in aid of the child soldiers charity 'Warchild'. As a play on the title, the album 'It was this or football will be released in 2 halves, the second half coming with a new single in January 2009.
